The festival of Lohri has a long history and there have been references which were mentioned by the European visitors. The references date the festival back to Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s Lahore Durbar and how Maharaja Ranjit Singh used to distribute sweets to the locals on the occasion of Lohri in the year 1836. Apart from the references made by the European visitors, the festival of Lohri also has a lot of folklore tales attached to it. The festival of Lohri is believed to be the end of the winter season and marks the beginning of longer days.

The festival of Lohri has a lot of significance, and even though, today the meaning of the festival in metro cities is lost, the people in rural areas continue to celebrate the festival in a conventional way. The festival of Lohri is also called the festival of winter crop, which is the Rabi crop, which is celebrated by lighting bonfires and singing folk songs, and dancing with relatives. Another significance is associated with the tale of Dulla Bhatti, a hero who lived in Punjab during Akbar’s reign, who used to save girls from being sold off in the Middle East. Dulla Bhatti’s tales are prevalent all over in the folklore of Lohri.
