Guruji was a poet, a divine messenger, a warrior as also a philosopher. Apart from Punjabi, he was also familiar with Arabic, Sanskrit and Persian. He knew martial arts, archery and horse-riding. He was the one who decreed Guru Granth Sahib Ji as the next and perpetual Guru of the Sikhs.

These Ks are still followed by his followers. Jaap Sahib, Benti Chaupai, Amrit Savaiye are some of his literary contributions. He died on 7 October 1708 when he was just 42 years of age.
